"Pray and you will be saved; do not pray and you will be lost!"

(St Alphonsus Mary Liguori)

Pray with our holy father, St Alphonsus:

0 my God, help me to remember -
That time is short, eternity is long.
What good is all the greatness of this world at the hour of death?
To love You, my God, and save my soul is the one thing necessary.
Without You, there is no peace, no joy.
My God, I need fear nothing but sin.
For to lose You, my God, is to lose all.
0 my God, help me to remember -
That to gain all I must leave all,
That in loving You I have all good things: the infinite riches of Christ and His
Church, the motherly protection of Mary,
peace beyond understanding, joy unspeakable!

Eternal Father, your Son has promised that whatever we ask in His Name will be
given to us.
In His Name I pray:
give me a burning faith, a joyful hope, a holy love for Jesus Christ.
Give me the grace of perseverance in doing Your will in all things.
Do with me what You will.
I repent of having offended You.
Grant, O Lord, that I may love You always and never let me be separated from
You.

O my God and my All, make me a saint!

PRAYER TO OBTAIN THE GRACES NECESSARY FOR SALVATION

Eternal Father, thy Son has promised that thou wilt grant us all the graces for which we ask thee in his name. In the name, therefore, and by the merits of Jesus Christ, I ask the following graces for myself and for all mankind.

First, I pray thee to give me a lively faith in all that the holy Roman Church teaches me. Enlighten me also that I may know the vanity of the goods of this world and the immensity of the infinite good that thou art. Make me also see the deformity of the sins I have committed, that I may humble myself and detest them as I should, and on the other hand show me how worthy thou art because of thy goodness, that I should love thee with all my heart. Make me know also the love thou hast borne me, that from this day forward I may try to be grateful for so much goodness.

Secondly, give me a firm confidence of receiving thy merciful pardon for my sins, holy perseverance, and finally, the glory of heaven, through the merits of Jesus Christ and the intercession of Mary.

Thirdly, give me a great love of thee, which shall detach from the love of this world and of myself, so that I may love none other but thee and may neither do nor desire anything else but what is for thy glory.

Fourthly, I beg of thee a perfect resignation to thy will, in accepting with tranquility sorrows, infirmities, contempt, persecutions, aridity of spirit, loss of property, of esteem, of relations, and every other cross which shall come to me from thy hands. I offer myself entirely to thee, that thou mayest do with me and all that belongs to me what thou pleasest. Do thou only give me light and strength to do thy will, and especially at the hour of death help me to sacrifice my life to thee with all the affection I am capable of, in union with the sacrifice which thy Son Jesus Christ made of his life on the cross on Calvary.

Fifthly, I beg of thee a great sorrow for my sins, which may make me grieve over them as long as I live and weep for the insults I have offered thee, the sovereign good who art worthy of infinite love and who hast loved me so much.

Sixthly, I pray thee to give me the spirit of true humility and meekness, that I may accept with peace and even with joy all the contempt, ingratitude and ill-treatment I may receive. At the same time I also pray thee to give me perfect charity, which shall make me wish well to those who have done evil to me, and to do what good I can, at least by praying, for those who have in any way injured me.

Seventhly, I beg thee to give me love for the virtue of holy mortification, by which I may chastise my rebellious senses and cross my self-love; at the same time I beg thee to give me holy purity of body and the grace to resist all bad temptations, by always having recourse to thee and thy most holy mother.

Give me grace faithfully to obey my spiritual father and all my superiors in all things. Give me an upright intention, that in all I desire and do I may seek only thy glory and to please thee alone. Give me a great confidence in the Passion of Jesus Christ and in the intercession of Mary immaculate. Give me a great love for the sacrament of the altar and a tender devotion and love to thy holy mother. Give me, I pray thee, above all, holy perseverance and the grace always to pray for it, especially in time of temptation and at the hour of death.

Lastly, I recommend to thee the holy souls of purgatory, my relations and benefactors, and in a special manner I recommend to thee all those who hate me or who have in any way offended me; I beg thee to render them good for the evil they have done or may wish to do me. I recommend to thee all infidels, heretics, and all poor sinners; give them light and strength to deliver themselves from sin.

O most loving God, make thyself known and loved by all, but especially by those who have been more ungrateful to thee than others, so that by thy goodness I may come one day to sing thy mercies in heaven, for my hope is in the merits of thy blood and in the patronage of Mary. Mary, mother of God, pray to Jesus for me. So I hope. So may it be. A
men.

As a young man, St Alphonsus painted this beautiful image of his beloved Madonna, Our Lady.  How he loved Mary!  And how he spoke his own love in so many ways--from his great prayers and hymns, and his marvellous book "The Glories of Mary."  St Alphonsus Mary believed that devotion to Mary is a sure sign of predestination!

Pray with our holy father, St Alphonsus:

Most Holy Immaculate Virgin and my Mother Mary, * to thee, who art the Mother of my Lord, the Queen of the world, the Advocate, the Hope, and the Refuge of sinners, * I  have recourse today, I , who am the most miserable of all. * I render thee my most humble homage, 0 great Queen, * and I thank thee for all the graces thou hast conferred on me until now; * particularly for having delivered me from hell, which I have so often deserved.

I love thee, 0 most amiable Lady; and for the love which I bear thee, * I promise to serve thee always and to do all in my power to make others love thee also. * I place in thee all my hopes, I confide my salvation to thy care.

marycssr.jpg (25024 bytes)Accept me for thy servant, and receive me under thy mantle, O Mother of Mercy. * And since thou art so powerful with God, deliver me from all temptations, * or rather obtain for me the strength to triumph over them until death. * Of thee I ask a perfect love for Jesus Christ.

Through thee I hope to die a good death. * 0 my Mother, by the love which thou bearest to God, * I beseech thee to help me at all times, * but especially at the last moment of my life. * Leave me not, I beseech thee, until thou seest me safe in Heaven; blessing thee and singing thy mercies for all eternity.

Amen. So I hope. So may it be.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the most holy sacrament. I love Thee above all things, and I desire to receive Thee into my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as if Thou wert already there, and unite myself wholly to Thee: never permit me to be separated from Thee.  Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Most Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, Father of the poor, Comforter of
the afflicted, Light of hearts, Sanctifier of souls; behold me
prostrate in Thy presence.

I adore Thee with profoundest homage: I bless Thee a thousand
times, and with the Seraphim who stand before Thy throne, I also
say: "Holy, holy, holy."

I firmly believe that Thou art eternal, consubstantial with the
Father and the Divine Son. I hope in Thy goodness that Thou wilt
deign to save and sanctify my soul. I love Thee, 0 Divine Love, with
all my affections above all the things of this world, because Thou
art Infinite Goodness, alone worthy of all love.

And since in my ingratitude and blindness to Thy holy inspirations, I
have so often offended Thee by my sins, with tears in my eyes I beg
Thy pardon a thousand times, and am more sorry for having offended
Thee, the Sovereign Good, than for any other evil.

I offer Thee this most cold heart of mine, and I pray Thee to pierce
it with a ray of Thy light, and with a spark of Thy fire, which shall
melt the hard ice of my iniquities.

Thou who didst fill the soul of the most holy Mary with immense
graces, and didst inflame the hearts of the Apostles with holy zeal,
inflame, I beseech Thee, my heart also with Thy love.

Thou art the Divine Spirit; give me courage against all evil spirits.
Thou art Fire; enkindle in me Thy love.
Thou art Light; enlighten my mind with the knowledge of eternal things.
Thou art the Dove; give me innocence of life.
Thou art the gentle Breeze; disperse the storms of my passions.
Thou art the Tongue; teach me how to bless Thee always.
Thou art the Cloud; shelter me under the shadow of Thy protection.

And lastly, Thou art the Giver of all heavenly gifts; animate me, I
beseech Thee, with Thy grace; sanctify me with Thy charity;
enlighten me with Thy wisdom; adopt me by Thy goodness as Thy son,
and save me in Thy infinite mercy; so that I may ever bless Thee,
praise Thee, and love Thee; first during this life on earth, and then
in heaven for all eternity. Amen.

pray with our father Alphonsus:

Thanksgiving for the Gift of Holy Faith:

O Savior of the world, I thank Thee for myself and all my brethren in the faith, that Thou hast called and admitted us to live in that true faith which the holystalp.jpg (21765 bytes) Catholic Roman Church teaches.

With St Francis of Sales I will say to Thee: 'Good God, many and great are the blessings by which I am bound to Thee, and for which I give Thee most hearty thanks; but how can I sufficiently thank Thee for having enlightened me with the holy faith? I tremble, O Lord, when I compare this Thy great gift with my own ingratitude'.

Nevertheless, I thank Thee, O Lord, as much as such a miserable creature is able, and I beseech Thee to make known to all men the beauty of Thy holy faith.

'O God,' exclaimed the same Saint, 'the beauty of Thy holy faith appears so lovely that I die of love for it; and it seems to me that I ought to preserve this precious gift of God in a heart all perfumed with devotion.'

But, alas! O Jesus, my Redeemer, how few are they who live in this holy faith! O God, the greatest part of mankind lies buried in the darkness of infidelity or of heresy!

Thou didst humble Thyself to death, even to the death of the Cross, for the salvation of men, and these very men ungratefully refuse even to know Thee. Ah, I beseech Thee, Almighty God, O supreme infinite Good, make Thyself known by all, make Thyself loved by all.

O Mary, great Mother of God, thou art the protectress of all; behold the havoc which hell in our times is causing, and daily causes more and more, by spreading on every side so many poisonous books, containing many errors against faith, which, for our misfortune, freely circulate even in Catholic countries. Ah, in pity beseech thy God, who loves thee so much. Beseech Him, and remedy this great ruin.

Pray, pray; thy prayers are all-powerful with Jesus thy Son, who delights to grant thee all thy requests. Amen

Prayer of St Clement Mary Hofbauer for Strengthening of The Gift of FaithStCMH.jpg (11474 bytes)

O My Redeemer, will that terrible moment ever come when but few Christians shall be left who are inspired by the spirit of faith, that moment when Your indignation shall be provoked and Your protection shall be taken from us? Have our vices and our evil lives irrevocably moved Your justice to take vengeance, perhaps this very day, upon Your children?

We beg You, the Beginning and the End of faith, with contrite hearts, not to let the light of faith be extinguished in souls.

Remember Your mercies of old, turn Your eyes in compassion upon the vineyard planted by Your own right hand, and watered by the tears of the Apostles, by the precious blood of countless martyrs, and made fruitful by the prayers of so many confessors and innocent virgins.

O divine Mediator, look upon those zealous souls who raise their hearts to You and pray without ceasing for the maintenance of that most precious gift of Yours, the True Faith. Keep us safe in the true Catholic and Roman Faith.

Preserve us in Your holy faith, for if we are rich with this precious gift, we shall gladly endure every sorrow and nothing shall ever be able to change our happiness. Without this great treasure of faith, our unhappiness would be unspeakable and without limit.

O Good Jesus, Author of our faith, preserve it pure within us; keep us safe in the barque of Peter, faithful and obedient to his successor, and Your vicar here on earth, so that the unity of the holy Church may be maintained, holiness fostered, the Holy See protected in freedom, and the Church universal extended to the benefit of souls.

O Jesus, Author of our faith, humble and convert the enemies of Your Church; grant true peace and concord to all Christian kings and princesand to all believers; strengthen and preserve us in Your holy service to the end, that we may live with You and die in You.

O Jesus, Author of our faith, let me live for You and die for You. Amen

PRAYERS FOUND IN BISHOP NEUMANN'S DIARY

jneumann1.jpg (11578 bytes)My God, how great Thou art, how wonderful in all Thy works! Teach me Thy will that I may begin and end all my actions for Thy greater glory.

Speak to me, 0 my God, let me know Thy will, for behold I am ready to fulfill Thy every command. The difficult, the irksome, I will patiently endure for love of Thee.

0 my God, I thank Thee for the love Thou hast planted in my heart. I will cultivate this precious flower. I will guard it night and day that nothing may injure it. Do Thou, 0 Lord, water it with the dew of Thy grace.

THIS IS SAINT JOHN NEUMANN'S FAVORITE PRAYER DURING THE SOLEMN 40-HOURS EXPOSITION

How much I love You, 0 my Jesus. I wish to love You with my whole heart; yet I do not love You enough.

My lack of devotion and my sloth make me anxious. I have one desire, that of being near you in the Blessed Sacrament. You are the sweet bridegroom of my soul, my Jesus, my love, my all; gladly would I endure hunger, thirst, heat and cold to remain always with You in the Blessed Sacrament.

Would that in your Eucharistic presence I might unceasingly weep over my sins. Take entire possession of me. To you I consecrate all the powers of my soul and body, my whole being. Would that I could infuse into all hearts a burning love for You. What great glory would be given to You here on earth, if every heart were an altar on which every human will were laid in perfect conformity with Your will to be consumed by the fire of Your love.
