PASTOR'S CORNER

Fr. Richard Bennett, C.SS.R.

Dear Parishioners,
This Sunday the Church celebrates Trinity Sunday. Throughout our history there have been many attempts  to try to grasp one of the central mysteries of our faith, that is, the Holy Trinity, three persons in one God. St.Patrick, the great missionary to Ireland, would take advantage of the green hills covered in shamrocks to help  the people better understand the Christian notion of a triune God.  This relationship has always been the center  of the Christian faith. St. Patrick used the shamrock a an illustration of how three separate leaves could be seen  individually in one and at the same time connected to a single stem. Their connectivity to each other does not take away from the distinctive quality of each leaf.  Another attempt to instruct children in the faith was initiated by German monks.  Monasteries have always had the burden of supporting themselves through the sale of goods.  Many of these German monks would bake  bread to be sold and would use the leftover scraps of dough by rolling them into what we have now come to know as a pretzel.  They created a design that had three  sections and a twist in the middle, the three sections symbolizing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  The salted treats were used in both catechetical instruction and as rewards for children who learned their prayers.  In our modern scientific age others have used chemical       formulas such as H20 to better illustrate the theological   concept of the Holy Trinity.  For example, H20 can be found in a solid state (ice), a liquid state (water), or in gas form such as steam that you may find as a source of  heat or produced in a common household iron.  In the New Testament, Christ reveals himself to us as the long-awaited Messiah and God’s only begotten Son.  Christ refers to himself as having been sent by the Father and   that the Father lives in him and he in the Father.  God the  Holy Spirit is made manifest in the form of a dove at Christ’s baptism and as tongues of fire on the feast of Pentecost.   In this triangular relationship, God the Father,  Son, and Spirit reign as one without the loss of their unique identities. Ultimately, the Holy Trinity is all about  a relationship. The Christian community - friends, families, and loved ones – is called to reflect the love of  God and the unity of God in and through our relationships.  On this solemn feast my prayer is that our  faith community here at the Basilica will be characterized  by the love and unity that is mirrored in the mystery of the  Sacred Trinity.    May God bless you and your families.

Fr. Richard S. Bennett, C.Ss.R.

PRAY THE ROSARY

THE CRANES AND THE ABBESS FROM ORFORDAcross the river from Orford, I saw a flock of cranes arise.
With straightened necks and legs like stilts rising before my eyes.
The cranes came in the Springtime but did not long bide.
They would make their nests on some distant stretch along the riverside.
The town of Orford like other towns is a restless place at best.
Young folks leave as the cranes left for a final place of rest.
One day, a young girl from Orford set out at break of day
And drove to a hill near St. Botolph's town. A score of miles away,
She joined nuns working in a field, praising God night and day,
She left all things behind her, even the clothes she wore,
And clothed herself with rough Trappist robes to wear forevermore.
The cranes came in their season as long as they could fly,
But the years roll on and it may be their coming has long gone by.
The young girl is now abbess like abbesses of old,
Chosen to rule with mother love and not with power or gold.
The Orford folk love the abbess though she left for the cloistered hill,
They know that she prays for them night and day and so is with them still.
The abbess prays for the young folk seeking a place of rest,
That they find their own road to the heart of God and that will be the best.

- John E. Doherty, C.Ss.R.
