PASTOR'S CORNER

Fr. Richard Bennett, C.SS.R.

Dear Parishioners,

All the Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers, Basilica staff, and faculty of our Catholic grammar school would like to wish all mothers a very happy and blessed Mother's Day.

This past weekend the Spanish Social Committee sponsored a Mother's Day celebration in the Parish Center. It was by far one of the best celebrations I have attended here at the Basilica. Many of our parishioners were delighted to dance the night away to the sounds of live music or to a DJ who played while the band was on break. We were entertained by drawings for donated gift baskets and prizes that were given away intermittently throughout the evening. A number of us were delightfully surprised to have Father Fabio Marín spontaneously jump up as our guest host and give us impromptu descriptions of the styles and designs worn by members of our parish for a Mother's Day fashion show. We enjoyed appetizer platters of typical Latin food, supplemented with choices of beer, wine, or carbonated beverages to be enjoyed at elegant tables adorned with fresh-cut flowers. It was a privilege to honor Flora Fuentes this year as an exemplary mother, grandmother, and Christian witness to our extended family at the Basilica. Awards were presented and a photographer from the Mission Hill Gazette was on hand to take a photo for inclusion in the paper's next issue. We were also dazzled by the spectacular talents of those who participated in the dance competition. Trophies were awarded to couples by popular vote of the crowd. One contestant tried to woo the judges by going so far as to twist her ankle in hopes of walking home with the trophy for the best rendition of the Twist! A good time was had by all!

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the members of the Spanish Social Committee for all their hard work and dedication that made this Mother's Day celebration such a marvelous success. The event raised a total of $1,133.00 in donations for the restoration fund of the Basilica. ¡Muchas gracias por su generosidad!

In addition, I also wish to thank Ms. Maura Bradley, Mr. Jack Currivan, Sr. Mary Rose Watkins, OSF, and the planning committee that labored to organize our first annual fundraiser dinner on behalf of our Catholic school. Months of preparation were put into the event which took place at Lantana's in Randolph after having celebrated the 12:30 Mass in the Basilica. As soon as you walked in, large three foot photos of our children greeted the attendees. Each table was visited by a faculty member and students from our school who expressed their sincere appreciation for the prayers and financial support offered by our benefactors. All enjoyed a delicious meal, great conversation with grammar school students both past and present with pictures of days gone by and creative art projects and displays crafted by our talented children. We were most proud to be able to honor one of Mission Grammar's finest "Sister Donna McHugh, SSND " who was recognized by our school and State Representative Jeffrey Sánchez for a total of forty-two years of committed service to Catholic education here at our Basilica school. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all the kindness and generosity our friends and benefactors have given throughout the years in support of Catholic education here at Mission. We look forward to implementing the next stages of our strategic plan for academic excellence and financial development. May God bless us all in this "MISSION".

PRAY THE ROSARY

THE CRANES AND THE ABBESS FROM ORFORDAcross the river from Orford, I saw a flock of cranes arise.
With straightened necks and legs like stilts rising before my eyes.
The cranes came in the Springtime but did not long bide.
They would make their nests on some distant stretch along the riverside.
The town of Orford like other towns is a restless place at best.
Young folks leave as the cranes left for a final place of rest.
One day, a young girl from Orford set out at break of day
And drove to a hill near St. Botolph's town. A score of miles away,
She joined nuns working in a field, praising God night and day,
She left all things behind her, even the clothes she wore,
And clothed herself with rough Trappist robes to wear forevermore.
The cranes came in their season as long as they could fly,
But the years roll on and it may be their coming has long gone by.
The young girl is now abbess like abbesses of old,
Chosen to rule with mother love and not with power or gold.
The Orford folk love the abbess though she left for the cloistered hill,
They know that she prays for them night and day and so is with them still.
The abbess prays for the young folk seeking a place of rest,
That they find their own road to the heart of God and that will be the best.

- John E. Doherty, C.Ss.R.
