PASTOR'S CORNER

Fr. Richard Bennett, C.SS.R.

Dear Parishioners,

Without a doubt this past Holy Week was by far one of the most meaningful and enjoyable for me as priest leading the congregation.   I believe it was truly an experience of grace for all of our people.  Once again I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Eric Cuesta, Sabbay Lay, Michael Malvesti, Diana M. Ramirez, Edwin Serrano, Diomarys Toledano and Mark B. Wildermuth who were received into full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.  As you see our newest members around the parish and participating in church life, be sure to extend a hand and welcome them into the full life and ministry of our parish community.

It is said that many hands make the work light.  This was true for us here at Mission as we made all the preparations necessary for a plethora of liturgical services.  I would like to thank Angel Ríos who worked so hard to replace countless lights in the Basilica together with José Arias and Hugo Simancas who took care of our janitorial needs.  I am grateful to the lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, and   servers who participated with such devotion and dedication this past week.  I too am appreciative of the army of volunteers that responded Saturday morning to decorate the Basilica and arrange its flowers and those from our Spanish community who came on Holy Saturday and gave a meticulous cleaning to the church floors, benches, radiators, and confessionals  as well as those who organized and participated in the Stations of the Cross through the neighborhood.  Enhancing our liturgy with beautiful music was the responsibility of Glenn Goda, our director of music ministry.   Thanks to the very gifted musicians and choir members, our liturgy was further enhanced as we together made “a  joyful noise unto the Lord”, celebrating our salvation by  recalling the definitive event of Christ’s resurrection.  In addition, I would like to recognize our support staff, most especially our parish secretaries and receptionists, who did a great deal of the prep work running off programs and countless numbers of copies in anticipation of Holy Week.  My heartfelt appreciation goes out to our church sacristans who labored for hours: washing, polishing, ironing, and cleaning the various liturgical elements necessary for our worship during these solemn days.  Lastly, I wish to express my gratitude to Father Matthew Allman, C.Ss.R., who did so much of the behind-the-scenes work that enabled us to have such a marvelous celebration with the members of our RCIA program and our liturgical services.

A blessed Easter season to you and your family.

                             Fr. Richard Bennett, CSSR

PRAY THE ROSARY

THE CRANES AND THE ABBESS FROM ORFORDAcross the river from Orford, I saw a flock of cranes arise.
With straightened necks and legs like stilts rising before my eyes.
The cranes came in the Springtime but did not long bide.
They would make their nests on some distant stretch along the riverside.
The town of Orford like other towns is a restless place at best.
Young folks leave as the cranes left for a final place of rest.
One day, a young girl from Orford set out at break of day
And drove to a hill near St. Botolph's town. A score of miles away,
She joined nuns working in a field, praising God night and day,
She left all things behind her, even the clothes she wore,
And clothed herself with rough Trappist robes to wear forevermore.
The cranes came in their season as long as they could fly,
But the years roll on and it may be their coming has long gone by.
The young girl is now abbess like abbesses of old,
Chosen to rule with mother love and not with power or gold.
The Orford folk love the abbess though she left for the cloistered hill,
They know that she prays for them night and day and so is with them still.
The abbess prays for the young folk seeking a place of rest,
That they find their own road to the heart of God and that will be the best.

- John E. Doherty, C.Ss.R.
