PALM SUNDAY

In ancient times, in a city under siege, the   people would wave palm branches as a sign of accepting a new general or a new king.  This is what is happens on Palm Sunday, the people are proclaiming Jesus  as King: they are    surrendering to his reign.  No wonder the Pharisees were worried.  Palms will be distributed at all Sunday Masses next weekend.

PASTOR'S CORNER

Fr. Richard Bennett, C.SS.R.

Dear Parishioners,

I was absolutely delighted to see the terrific response that we received from our  people on Saturday, March 1st, for the first annual BIG meeting.  I hope that the information shared with regard to the personnel shortage among the Redemptorists of the Baltimore province (East Coast), the challenges of meeting present and future pastoral needs of our parish, and, thirdly, the tremendous financial need to increase weekly giving in support of this beautiful Romanesque basilica and its Catholic school.   After the lunch break, opportunities were given for people to sign up for various ministries in the life of our parish.  This was a marvelous beginning, however, we still have much work to do.   As our accountant pointed out in her financial report, the amount of the Sunday collection is greatly insufficient in terms of meeting the operating expenses of the parish. Therefore, the parish pastoral council and my financial advisors have strongly encouraged me to work this year at increasing the number of people who give through the monthly automated parish collection system known as ParishPay.   For the next several months there will be announcements made at the end of Mass, inserts in weekly bulletins, and letters going out to our parishioners helping to explain the process, the benefits the individual and the parish will receive, and supplying information about how to easily enroll as a member of  the ParishPay program.  As a general rule, parishioners should set a minimum contribution of $8.00 per week for the support of their church.  The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that we, as a church, pay our employees a minimum wage of $8.00 per hour.   Weekly contributions less than this amount impede our ability to meet the state’s mandate and provide the type of pastoral ministry and service that parishioners want and expect.  One could easily say that the information shared with the 110 participants at the BIG meeting on Saturday, March 1st, could be summarized in one single statement:  This is the present cost of doing ministry within the Catholic Church in 2008.

I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all those who signed up to be trained for the various ministries that make up our parish outreach.  The pastoral staff will inform you of the upcoming training sessions and begin to schedule you for active ministry.  The relationship with our God and our Church, like all relationships, is characterized by both giving and receiving.  I thank you for all your kindness and generosity in years past and I ask you to work with me and the pastoral staff to forge a bright and promising future for this Basilica, a future full of hope that will ensure our ministerial and financial stability.

                             Fr. Richard Bennett, CSSR

PRAY THE ROSARY

THE CRANES AND THE ABBESS FROM ORFORDAcross the river from Orford, I saw a flock of cranes arise.
With straightened necks and legs like stilts rising before my eyes.
The cranes came in the Springtime but did not long bide.
They would make their nests on some distant stretch along the riverside.
The town of Orford like other towns is a restless place at best.
Young folks leave as the cranes left for a final place of rest.
One day, a young girl from Orford set out at break of day
And drove to a hill near St. Botolph's town. A score of miles away,
She joined nuns working in a field, praising God night and day,
She left all things behind her, even the clothes she wore,
And clothed herself with rough Trappist robes to wear forevermore.
The cranes came in their season as long as they could fly,
But the years roll on and it may be their coming has long gone by.
The young girl is now abbess like abbesses of old,
Chosen to rule with mother love and not with power or gold.
The Orford folk love the abbess though she left for the cloistered hill,
They know that she prays for them night and day and so is with them still.
The abbess prays for the young folk seeking a place of rest,
That they find their own road to the heart of God and that will be the best.

- John E. Doherty, C.Ss.R.
